The last two weeks have been nothing short of a roller coaster for our team, with away games at Cardiff and Bristol testing our resilience and character. We managed to secure just one win out of the four games played, marking the first time this season that we lost a doubleheader.
Cardiff Doubleheader: Two Tough Losses
Our visit to Cardiff was a harsh reminder of the thin line between victory and defeat. In Game 1, we suffered a narrow 6-4 loss. The match was fiercely contested, but two crucial defensive and mental errors ultimately cost us the game. Adding to our frustration were four questionable umpire calls, all of which went against us. Despite these setbacks, the team fought hard until the very end, but it just wasn't enough to turn the tide in our favor.
Game 2 saw us struggling right from the start. A disastrous first inning filled with errors, walks, and hit-by-pitches handed Cardiff a 6-run lead. Our bats remained quiet until the last two innings when we were down 9-1. We launched a spirited comeback, scoring 7 runs, but poor base running dashed our hopes of a miracle finish. We ended up losing 10-8, marking a painful end to a difficult day.
Bristol Game 1: A Hard-Fought Victory
Our fortunes took a turn for the better as we headed to Bristol. Game 1 was a true pitcher's duel, with Henry Collins delivering a stellar performance to keep the score tied at 1-1. The game remained deadlocked until we entered an extra inning, where we managed to score 3 runs, ultimately securing a 4-3 victory. Bristol threatened in the bottom half, leaving two runners in scoring position, but our defense held firm. The entire team gave everything they had, especially under the scorching heat, which unfortunately took a toll on us in Game 2.
Bristol Game 2: Injuries and Exhaustion
The second game in Bristol was a tough pill to swallow. With three players sustaining injuries and others playing out of position, we faced an uphill battle. The fatigue from Game 1 was evident, and we couldn't muster enough to secure the win we needed to be crowned champions of the AAA South Division 2024.
Looking Ahead: The Championship Chase Continues
As we return to Westmorland Park this Sunday, we do so with renewed hope and a full squad. We still have five games left to play—a doubleheader this Sunday, August 18th a gainst Cardiff and a tripleheader on the 25th against New Forest. The race for the league championship is far from over, with the top spot in the AAA Semi-Final still up for grabs. It's a tight battle between the Croydon Pirates, Liverpool Trojans, and Bracknell Inferno.
The upcoming games will be crucial, and we're determined to finish the season strong, especially on our home turf. Let's bring that championship home!
